What to Wear for Maternity Photos: A Photographer’s Guide to a Timeless Maternity Session
Planning your maternity photos should feel exciting—not like one more thing to figure out before baby arrives. One of the questions I hear most often from expecting moms is, “What should I wear for my maternity photos?”
As a maternity photographer in Montgomery, Illinois, serving families throughout Oswego, Aurora, Yorkville and the Chicago suburbs, I believe what you wear should help you feel beautiful, comfortable and completely yourself. And when you step into my boutique home studio, you don't have to figure it all out alone. From choosing from my collection of maternity gowns to planning colors, styling and the overall feel of your session, I'll guide you through the process so you can focus on enjoying this chapter of motherhood.
Start With How You Want to Feel in Your Maternity Photos
Before choosing a color, fabric or style, I encourage moms to think about how they want to feel when they look back at these photographs. Romantic and feminine? Simple and timeless? Elegant and dramatic? Soft and intimate?
Your maternity wardrobe can help create that feeling. This is also why I offer a curated collection of maternity gowns in my studio. You don't necessarily need to shop for something you'll only wear once or arrive already knowing what photographs best. We'll talk about your vision beforehand, and I'll help guide you toward pieces that flatter your changing body and complement the style we're creating together.
Most importantly, the goal isn't to hide your pregnant body—it's to celebrate it. This season is temporary, and your photographs should remind you someday of just how beautiful this chapter really was.

Choose Colors and Fabrics That Photograph Beautifully
The right color and fabric can completely change the way a maternity portrait feels. Soft neutrals and earthy tones can create a timeless, organic look, while deeper or richer colors can add drama and elegance. There isn't one “perfect” color for maternity photos—the best choice is the one that complements your skin tone, your personal style and the overall vision for your session.
Fabric matters too. Flowing fabrics create beautiful movement and softness, while more fitted gowns can highlight the shape of your bump in a completely different way. Texture, sleeves, draping and even a little sparkle can all photograph beautifully when they're chosen intentionally.
You also don't have to limit yourself to one look. Depending on the session we plan together, a wardrobe change can give you different styles within the same gallery—from soft and romantic to something a little more glamorous or dramatic.
What Should Your Partner or Children Wear for Maternity Photos?
If your partner or children will be joining you for part of your maternity session, their clothing should complement yours rather than compete with it. The goal isn't for everyone to match perfectly—it's to create a family wardrobe that feels connected when photographed together.
I generally recommend choosing your maternity look first and building everyone else's wardrobe around it. Neutral or complementary tones, simple textures and clothing without large logos or distracting patterns tend to photograph beautifully and keep the attention where it belongs: on your family and this season you're celebrating.
And you don't have to figure out everyone's wardrobe on your own. Styling is part of the planning process, so I'm happy to help you coordinate the overall look before your session. That guidance is part of creating photographs that feel intentional from beginning to end—not simply showing up and hoping everyone's outfits work together. And beautiful doesn't have to mean elaborate. Something as simple as jeans and classic white tops can create relaxed, timeless maternity portraits that keep the focus entirely on your connection and the little one you're waiting to meet.

Do I Need to Buy a Maternity Gown for My Photoshoot?
Not necessarily—and this is one of the reasons I love being able to offer a maternity wardrobe in my studio. I know purchasing a special gown for a single occasion isn't something every mom wants or needs to do.
My boutique home studio includes a curated collection of maternity gowns and pieces that clients can use during their session. We'll discuss the look you're drawn to during the planning process, and I can help you choose options that work beautifully with your vision, body and the style of portraits we're creating.
But a maternity session doesn't have to mean a gown at all. You may love something glamorous and flowing, prefer the simplicity of jeans and a white top, or want a combination of both. The goal is never to make you fit into one version of maternity photography. It's to create a session that still feels like you—just thoughtfully styled, beautifully photographed and fully guided.
What Should You Avoid Wearing for Maternity Photos?
There aren't many hard rules when it comes to maternity styling, but there are a few things I generally recommend avoiding. Large logos, bold graphics and very busy patterns can pull attention away from you and your connection with your baby. Clothing that constantly needs adjusting can also make it harder for you to relax and enjoy being photographed.
Fit matters too. Something that looks beautiful on a hanger may not photograph the way you expect once it's working around your growing bump. That's why I encourage planning your wardrobe before session day rather than leaving those decisions until the last minute.
And if you're unsure whether something will photograph well, ask me. I'd much rather help you make that decision ahead of time than have you spend your session worrying about your clothing. My job isn't only to photograph you—it's to guide you through the details that help everything come together beautifully.
Your Maternity Photos Should Feel Like You
Years from now, you probably won't remember every detail of what you wore—but you will remember how this season of your life felt. Your maternity photographs become part of your family's story, and I want the experience of creating them to feel just as meaningful as the images themselves.
From planning your wardrobe and choosing from my studio maternity collection to guiding your posing throughout the session, you don't have to arrive knowing how to be photographed. That's my job. Your job is simply to come in, slow down for a little while and allow yourself to celebrate the incredible work your body is doing.
At Alogs Photography, I photograph expecting mothers from Montgomery, Oswego, Aurora, Yorkville, Naperville and throughout the Chicago suburbs in my boutique home studio in Montgomery, Illinois. Whether you envision something glamorous and dramatic, soft and timeless, or beautifully simple, we'll create maternity portraits that feel true to you—and artwork your family can hold onto long after this chapter has passed.
