Swipe Through the Truth: 10 Things Parents Worry About Before a Newborn Session (and the Honest Answers You Deserve)

If you’ve ever considered booking a newborn session but found yourself hesitating… you’re not alone.
As a newborn photographer serving Aurora, Montgomery, Oswego, and the greater Chicago area, I’ve spent the past 11 years hearing the same quiet concerns from parents—loving, protective thoughts that sometimes hold them back from documenting one of the most fleeting seasons of life.
So today, I’m pulling back the curtain.
These are the 10 things I hear most before a newborn photography session… and the truth behind every single one.

1. “Does the posing hurt the baby?” Not at all. Every pose is designed to mirror the natural, curled position your baby spent nine months in. Your baby’s comfort always comes first, and nothing is forced—only gently guided by an experienced newborn photographer.

2. “Will my baby get cold?” Your baby stays warm the entire time. My Montgomery, IL studio is intentionally kept cozy, and I use soft wraps and layering techniques to keep your baby comfortable and content throughout the session.

3. “Is the studio flash safe for their eyes?” Yes—completely safe. Professional lighting is carefully controlled and never harmful to your baby’s developing eyes.

4. “Will this take all day?” Not at all. A typical newborn session lasts about 3 hours. That time allows for feeding, soothing, and working at your baby’s natural pace—never rushed, never overwhelming for you or your baby.

5. “Did I miss the window if my baby is older than two weeks?” You haven’t missed it. While those early days are ideal for posed newborn photography, beautiful images can still be captured beyond that timeframe. Every baby is different, and there’s always a way to create something meaningful.

6. “Will using a pacifier create a habit?” No. A pacifier is simply a helpful tool during the session to gently soothe your baby. It doesn’t interfere with long-term habits.

7. “Are the wraps too tight?” Never. Wrapping is done with intention and care—always allowing room for movement and constant safety checks. Your baby’s comfort is never compromised.

8. “How do you make it look so easy?” It may look effortless, but it comes from years of experience, training, and a deep understanding of newborn safety. As a professional newborn photographer serving families across Aurora and Chicago, every movement is thoughtful and practiced.

9. “What about baby acne, peeling skin, or redness?” Those are all completely normal—and yes, they can be softened or removed through professional retouching. Your final images will still look like your baby, just with those temporary details gently refined.

10. “My baby never sleeps…”I hear this one all the time 🤍And somehow… they always do. With patience, gentle techniques, and a calm environment, I create the conditions your baby needs to settle into those peaceful, sleepy moments.

The Truth Behind It All
After 11 years of photographing newborns for families in Montgomery, Aurora, Oswego, and throughout the Chicago area, one thing remains constant:
Your baby’s comfort and safety is the job.
Everything else—the posing, the lighting, the final artwork—that all comes from experience, patience, and a deep respect for this stage of life.
If these thoughts have ever crossed your mind, I hope this gave you a sense of ease. You’ll notice throughout my work that it’s never just about baby alone—it’s about the connection you’ve been building long before they arrived. Those first moments as a family, captured in a calm, guided studio experience here in Montgomery, IL, are often the ones parents treasure most.
Because you deserve to remember these days—not just wonder if you should have.
Save this for later, share it with a fellow mama, and when you’re ready… I’m here to guide you through every step of your newborn photography experience 🤍
